Fill or sign a form

  1. Choose Open file, or drag the PDF into the window.
  2. Use the form tools to complete supported fields. Add a visual signature where the form requires it.
  3. Save. Filling and signing save free.

A visual signature is a mark on the page. It is not a certificate-based digital signature. A scanned picture of a form may not contain interactive fields.

Highlight and annotate pages

Choose a highlight, drawing, note or stamp tool and mark the page. Markup saves free. Page numbers, headers, footers and watermarks on every page need Pro.

Read a scan and save a searchable copy

  1. Open the scanned PDF and choose Read text (OCR).
  2. Choose a language (Windows language packs decide which) and check the text.
  3. Save the text, or a searchable PDF copy that keeps the page pictures. Both save free.

Recognition happens offline. OCR can misread small, blurred or handwritten text; review important names and numbers.

Sign with a certificate

In the Sign group, choose your own PKCS#12 certificate file and save a signed copy. Properties shows whether an existing signature still covers intact content.

A certificate signature differs from a drawn or typed signature. Verification does not consult online revocation services.

Edit text or change the document

Try text replacement, redaction and page tools on your file. Saving these changes needs Windows Pro.

  • Text editing depends on the PDF content. Text baked into a scanned image is not an editable text layer.
  • Use a redaction tool when removing content; drawing a mark over text is an annotation.

Convert to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • PDF to Word keeps pictures beside editable text and turns ruled grids into tables. PDF to Word, Excel and PowerPoint save with Windows Pro.
  • Word, Excel and PowerPoint save as PDF free. A file that cannot convert completely is refused before anything is saved.
