PSD and PSB files: what they are and how to open them

A PSD is a Photoshop document with layers; PSB is its large document format. Open either in Photoshop to edit the layers, or in our Android or Windows app to see the flattened picture saved inside.

What is a PSD file?

PSD keeps the pieces of a Photoshop project: pixel layers, masks, text, effects and color information. A PNG or JPEG export is usually one finished picture; a PSD keeps the working document so its author can change individual parts.

PSB serves larger documents. Another app may import only some Photoshop features, so keep the original and check the result before replacing it. A flattened preview can show the finished design without giving access to its layers.

What is inside

Both formats start with 8BPS, followed by a version, dimensions, channel count, bit depth and color mode. Color data, image resources, layers and masks follow. The final section holds the merged image when the author saves one.

Photoshop’s Maximize Compatibility setting includes a composite picture for other readers. Our apps decode that picture rather than rebuilding the design from its layers. They show dimensions and a layer count, excluding groups.

Layers and the merged picture have different jobs.

How to open a PSD file

Windows

  • Adobe PhotoshopPaid. Opens the working document with its layers and Photoshop features.
  • GIMPFree. Imports PSD layers, though Photoshop features can look different.
  • Universal File Opener for WindowsOursShows the merged picture offline and converts to PNG or JPG. Layers are not opened individually. Files over 96 MB are refused.

Mac

  • Adobe PhotoshopPaid. Use it when the document must retain its Photoshop features.
  • GIMPFree. Imports PSD; check effects and text after opening.

Android

  • Photopea in a browserOpen the PSD through File, Open to work with layers; a small screen makes complex documents harder to edit.
  • Universal File OpenerOursShows the flattened picture offline and converts to PNG or JPG. Editing works on a PNG copy, leaving the Photoshop document unchanged.

  • PhotopeaOpens PSD documents for layer editing and exports PNG or JPG copies.
  • Universal File OpenerOursShows a supported flattened picture or embedded thumbnail on this device. Layers are not shown separately. Nothing is uploaded.

The app says Maximize Compatibility was off

Ask the author to resave in Photoshop with Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility enabled, or send a PNG. Our apps cannot rebuild the missing merged picture from layers.

I cannot select a layer

Our apps display the merged picture only. Use Photoshop, GIMP or Photopea to work with layers; check compatibility before saving changes.

A large document looks smaller or will not open

Android conversions are limited to 4096 pixels on the long side, Windows to 8192. Windows also refuses image files over 96 MB. Ask for a smaller exported copy if needed.

Convert a PSD file

  • To PNG or JPGIn our apps, open a compatible PSD or PSB and use Convert. The copy is flattened; it does not retain editable layers.
  • To an editable projectKeep the original PSD or PSB. Exporting to PNG or JPG cannot preserve Photoshop layers, masks or editable text.
