EPS file: what it is and how to open it

An EPS is Encapsulated PostScript artwork for printing and page layout. Illustrator opens the artwork. Our Android and Windows apps show a saved TIFF or WMF preview when present; they do not draw the PostScript artwork itself.

What is an EPS file?

EPS packages a PostScript program so a page layout application can place a drawing within a defined rectangle. It can describe vector shapes, text and bitmap images. Logos, illustrations and older print workflows commonly use it.

A preview lets software display a picture without interpreting the PostScript. A preview can be small even when the artwork would print sharply. For editing or a print-quality export, open the artwork in a compatible graphics tool.

What is inside

PostScript comments identify the file and describe a bounding box. Drawing commands follow. Some EPS files add a binary header pointing to the PostScript section and a TIFF or WMF preview; others have no preview our apps can show.

Our apps use the TIFF or WMF section as a picture. Without one, the file opens as PostScript text with an explanation. This text view neither executes the commands nor proves what the printed artwork will look like.

How to open an EPS file

Windows

  • Adobe IllustratorPaid. Opens EPS artwork for editing and exports PDF or image copies.
  • InkscapeFree. EPS import needs Ghostscript installed and configured. Check imported text and effects.
  • Universal File Opener for WindowsOursShows the TIFF or WMF preview offline and converts it to PNG or JPG. Without a preview, shows PostScript text.

Mac

  • Adobe IllustratorPaid. Opens the artwork rather than relying on its saved preview.
  • InkscapeFree. EPS import requires Ghostscript; installation details depend on the system.

Android

  • Universal File OpenerOursShows a supported saved TIFF or WMF preview offline. Without a preview it shows PostScript text. The artwork itself is not drawn.

In a browser

  • Ask for PDF or SVGFor rendered artwork, ask the author for PDF or SVG. Our opener shows EPS source text rather than drawing the PostScript.

Won’t open?

I see commands instead of a picture

This EPS has no preview our apps can display. Open the artwork in Illustrator, or in Inkscape with Ghostscript, and export a PDF or PNG.

The picture becomes blurry when I zoom

You are viewing the saved preview, not the vector artwork. Converting that preview to PNG cannot restore detail. Export the artwork itself in a graphics application.

Inkscape cannot import it

EPS import needs Ghostscript. Follow Inkscape’s setup instructions for your system, or ask the author for SVG or PDF.

A TIFF preview fails on Android

Some preview encodings, including 16-bit TIFF previews, are not decoded by this route on Android. Try the Windows app or ask the author for a PNG or PDF export.

Convert an EPS file

  • To PNG or JPG previewUse Convert in our apps when a preview opens. The output keeps only that preview’s detail.
  • To PDF or SVG artworkOpen the original in Illustrator or a compatible vector editor and save or export a copy. Check fonts and linked pictures before sharing.

All Android tools and limits for EPS files
  • Shows a supported saved TIFF or WMF preview offline. Without a preview it shows PostScript text. The artwork itself is not drawn.

Limits

  • A file without a supported preview opens as PostScript text, not a rendered drawing.
  • A preview conversion has only the saved preview’s detail. Some TIFF encodings, including 16-bit previews, do not decode on Android.
